I didn't originally come with the idea, but as soon as I heard it a song immediately came to mind. It's an old classic. A tune from an American musical comedy classic, "Back to school" by Adam Sandler. Yes. Billy Madison. I know, right? Bullshit, you know the song by heart too. Anyway...ITS TRUE! The return of Trophy Cup really does feel like the first day at back school, except, well...with many more beards, tattoos and face piercings. Team tents replace vandalized and lunch-funk covered tables and plastic cups replace those good ol' midwestern bags o' milk (seriously I had bags of milk in grade school).
Everyone's got their new back to school shoooooes and everyone like wants to totally make new friends and stuff and I mean yeah you get butterflies cause you're nervous and stuff but ummmm....when does my race start? Also, homework and practice. No, sorry, ugh goduuhh I have to PRACTICE cross in the park tonight ugh I can't make it. The races feel like recess in that the objectives are have fun and don't get hurt. And they always feel super short. Shit, was that the bell already? Well the good news is we get to go have hot lunch down at Burrito Azteca after. REALLY?!? GODUHH Trophy Cup is so COOULH! Then we transition back into the math class of reality at 8 in the morning. Coffee, please!
It's a ridiculously and absurdly extended metaphor, I realize. But I really do get that excited-giddy-kid-excited as these races transition us into fall. Y'all make Tuesday nights great.
