Alpenrose Velodrome | 6149 SW Shattuck Rd, Portland OR
I've never participated in any track events. I mean, I've never even ridden on a velodrome, but track cycling has gotta be one of my favorite niches of the sport to watch. It's fast paced, tough racing all day from the relative comfort of the bleachers/grass/whatever shade you can find. I find that it feels the most "sporty" brand of cycling and is an outlier insomuch that it requires a specific arena for competition. The velodrome. I don't even race track but I feel lucky that we have one here in Portland. It's difficult to capture that essence of race-day at the track; oscillating between extreme all-out efforts and trying to remain cool for the next race. Friendly competition. The anxiety of waiting. Subtle extremes of the velodrome.
The kind folks at Portland Design Works hosted their annual omnium race last weekend during the blistering heat. Kudos to all of the racers for it must have been at least three-hundred degrees down in the bowl of the track. PDW makes some of the finest cycling products, but they continually show up and run amazing events such as this one. They kept the grills cooking all day, serving up root beer floats with a heaping side of stoke. I also love seeing races with equal payouts and all the women's fields were pretty stacked! I'll take a pass on racing, but thanks to PDW for throwing such a damn fine event. Great racing. Good people. Great products.
Goodbye and thanks for all the root beer floats.
